Patio foundation and high water table

I live next to a lake and our garden slopes down to meet it at the end. It is heavy clay with the water table about 200mm below surface. I would like to lay sandstone patio at the end of the garden as an eating area but am deeply concerned about how to create a sub base that won't result in a load of cracked pavers in a couple of years time.

I'm currently thinking that I should keep things simple with a 200-300mm layer of MOT1 over a geotextile membrane followed by sand/cement bed. Any hole deeper than 200mm is going to be full of water so I'm not convinced going any deeper would help.

Is this doomed to failure or does anyone have any kind words of encouragement?!

I would err towards using a 125mm layer of leanmix concrete as your sub base in this instance
no issues with water run off and more likely to last

^^^ sounds like a plan, lean mix base 125mm thick laid to fails and bed slabs on wet mortar, i think it will work well MSH
