Hi all
I want to construct a stepping stone path out of paving slabs. it will run from the pavement to my front door step, about 4m. They will be laid amongst gravel over a weed control membrane.
My question is whether to lay them straight on sharp sand or to bed them into some sort of mortar. As there will only be about 5 or 6 of them I dont want to go to too much trouble.
Thanks

I have just done the same thing yesterday for a customer. They needed to be bedded on a mortar bed as sand would have washed away eventually

As its only a few slabs, if you dont want to mix up properly you can get a premixed slab layer in most DIY places, its not as good as a self mixed mortar but maybe easier. Also don't lay the slabs on top of the fabric, lay the slabs first then cut the fabric around them.

Why not lay on the matting?

Im guessing a lightweight weed suppressant fabric would be used and when I have laid over this before, at a show so we didn't contaminate the soil, the slabs moved slightly on the fabric and eventually tore it.
