2000 is too cheap in any part of the country let alone London and especially for that spec.

Read this page for typical specification

Not sure on London prices but I would say anything from £70 to about 100 a square meter is reasonable.

if he is a traveller there is a fair to good chance he is using slave labour
traveller slaves

his spec of putting 6 inches of type 1 and 4 inches of concrete is wrong for a residential driveway
it should be 6 inches and 1 1/2 inches of grit sand

its up to you really

ballpark for a proper job is around £75-90 P/M2

Did he take you to the last job he did, or did you just go yourself ??? I know plenty of pikies who live in massive houses.

they always start off with low prices then boost them as they call it once they have started, you know sensibly what to do but they prey on peoples greed by giving low prices, there is plenty of good contractors out there to choose from

you need to go on your gut feeling on which contractor is best for your driveway, we can give our opinion but only you know the answer as its you who has to live with it or pay to have it lifted and relaid

some contractors including myself do lay semi dry concrete on driveways if the ground is bad or if the home owner has a SUV or van as it does make the ground more stable for a heavier vehicle but the correct way is to use MOT Type 1

there is a specification for laying a domestic driveway which in a nutshell is:-
remove the existing driveway and excavate to a depth of 250mm
lay 150mm minimum MOT Type 1 sub base to the total area in layers of no more than 75mm and compact using a vibrating plate
install kerbs and drainage channels if required
cover the total area with 25 - 40m sand laying course and compact
screed the sand laying course to the correct level and fall
lay the block paving
cut in any border detail and cut blocks
brush kiln dried sand in the joints and compact using a vibrating plate

doing all that work on a 38m2 driveway for £52:63 m2 = Bargain and when it sounds too good to be true it normally is but that's the choice you have to make, good luck with what ever decision you make

The paving suppliers should have a full list of established recommended contractors as they do here in Ireland, as I say to customers when they say they got a far cheaper quote, "dont ring me when it goes wrong" most do !!!
