Can Anyone help ?

I have a Victorian Cottage which has Brick Floors. These are 50mm deep red bricks with no Frogs laid on sand directly over the chalk soil. I have extended the cottage and because the extension includes part of the old room I thought it would be nice to extend the old floor as far as a step down to the floor level in the extension.

I have done this and so far so good. The extended area includes a new chimney and to be in keeping I have constructed the 25mm raised hearth (building Regs) out of the Bricks.

Now we have the dilemma. In the old days the gaps ( 0 - 5mm) would have been filled with kiln dried sand, but this will not stay in the raised portion and my wife is not keen as she feels that the sand will stray on to the wood floors or carpet and that she won't be able to vacuum it. I have looked at narrow joint fillers but am advised that in a fireplace they will crack. Also they are now only available direct from the manufacturer, who is only really interested in supplying block paving jobs requiring a pallet load. I probably only need one bag !

Any Thoughts ?
